Deap Design is an industrial design and product strategy firm focused on bringing innovative and exciting products to market – always looking for a way to make new ideas possible. We are as passionate about innovations within the manufacturing capabilities as we are about creating great new experiences for the user!
Founded by seasoned industrial designers Anna-Pia and Erich Slothower, Deap Design works closely with their clients to provide a complete design solution. We develop product strategies and road-maps, concept sketches, mock-ups, sculpted 3D files, renderings, as well as creative input for engineering and manufacturing solutions. Our work is comprised of large and small projects, in various fields ranging from home security, laser cutting tools, bath fixtures to furniture and DC fast charging stations.
Every project starts by seeking out a clear understanding of the user and the different environments surrounding the product.
A large variety of clients and projects inspires our love to experiment, and the gain of material knowledge, manufacturing processes and consumer insights can transform new projects into industry leading designs and innovative solutions.
The Drumm collection is based on a playful idea for a low stacking stool. The wavy contour of the stool’s seat allows for a compact stacking with the legs creating a spiraling pattern as each stool is added on top. The center hole makes it easy to pick up and creates a strong iconic visual. When stacked, the stools resemble Doric columns, with vertical lines drawing attention away from the seams. Though the barstool and chairs don’t stack, they share the Doric inspiration, cork seat, and aluminum frame. Made from sustainable materials, the cork seat is 3 1/8" thick and very comfortable.

The Pill desk and dresser offer fresh functionality with playful, geometric designs that spark curiosity. These pieces defy the conventional drawer-in-frame construction, with drawers that are the outer form, pivoting or sliding on an inner frame. The desk's four round drawers pivot outward from each leg, opening with a knee tap and closing magnetically. The dresser drawers feature a push-to-open mechanism. Made from bendable plywood, the pill-shaped design is sleek and efficient.

3D Laser Cutter
The Glowforge team wanted to create a new type of laser-cutter – one that is compact, user-friendly and intuitive. In addition, while laser cutters typically belong in a shop environment, the Glowforge needed to feel right at home in any home or creative office environment – and if possible outshine any other devices in the room. After a few quick rounds of sketch concepts, the screen-printed glass on top gave it the perfect combination of the required inspection window, overall strength for the main housing and a simplified and sophisticated look for a large consumer product. Another major feature is the sculpted and grip-friendly handle, which gives Glowforge a great first impression – both visually and through interaction. The accessory air filter unit, which nests right underneath the laser cutter, allows the product to be placed anywhere in the room without needing to install a window exhaust pipe. In September 2015, Glowforge made history by launching the biggest 30-day crowd funding campaign ever, raising almost $28 million in a single month. We can’t wait to receive our product and start cutting away – perhaps starting a small production of some of our new ideas!
Smart security camera connecting to the existing light fixture
Serious + Friendly + Iconic + Architectural
The Kuna smart security camera is designed to buddy up with a variety of existing out-door light fixtures and architectural styles, adding a powerful safety feature to the entrance of the home. A focused effort on ultra-ease of installation was driving the design to its final, layered construction.
Smart motion security camera light
Adaptability and Range of motion
The Jiawei security light installs just as easily on a wall as underneath the eave thanks to a central pivoting location. With a minimal number of additional pivots, the Jiawei security light is maximizing the reach of both light and camera angles.
kitchen faucet, Kohler CO.
Based on the functionality of a classic restaurant-grade pre-rinse faucet, the Sous faucet is the result of a style driven exercise to create a rugged new kitchen faucet, with a handle located higher up to always be easy to access. The geometry of the spray was designed to be easy to grip, pull and move around.
Kohler Co. | Ceramic Bathroom Sink Faucet (1998)
Bol delivers water in an inspiring and familiar way. The ceramic body delivers laminar water released by a unique valve, and captures the old world look of an apothecary bowl. The original concept was to create a basic and inspiring faucet made with highly durable materials at an affordable price point -’the peoples faucet.’
Kohler Co. | BRIOLETTE SPUN GLASS VESSEL
Briolette is the result of pushing the boundaries of an old craft, working as part of a close-knit team of skilled workers and engineers at the Kohler WI glass shop. The faceted outside surface is formed against the mold; the smooth inside surface and the scalloped edge are formed by a spinning process.
Meyer Corp. for Cake Boss (2012)
A collection of rugged utensils in wood and grip-friendly silicone, designed to capture the up-beat and down-to-earth persona of Cake-Boss, from TLC’s hit American Reality TV Series “Cake Boss".
Bath & Shower Faucet Collection For Retail (2010)
The Refinia collection is inspired by nature, the smooth movement of water and the fluid lines drawn with a pencil on paper. The drain pull knob is a perfect little pebble carved into the soft shape of the spout.
Kohler Co. | Bath & Kitchen Single Control Faucets (1998)
Like an old pump, the Fairfax faucet is friendly and reliable. The design was initially created for a line of two single-control faucets, one for the bath and one for the kitchen. It was later expanded to a full collection of over 20 different products for the US, Europe, and Asia, including all bath and shower products, accessories, and additional kitchen faucets.
Hytec Baths, B.C., Canada | Custom Acrylic Bathtub (2007)
This tub was specifically designed for the guestrooms of the Swarovski owned resort in B.C. Canada. The angles and facets are reflecting the sparkles of crystal glass, and at the same time providing ease of use and a comfortable soaking space for one or two bathers. The requirement of several grab bars (to comply with hospitality codes) presented a tricky challenge for the design of this product.
Kohler Co. | Vitreous Wading Pool Sink (2009)
Yin Yang was designed as a decorative counter top sink. The drain is off-center and with a convex basin floor, a playful swirling movement is created that mimics the shape of the basin.
Hytec Baths, B.C., Canada | Ellesmere & Seamount Acrylic Bathtubs (2006)
Named after the islands outside of British Columbia where these bathtubs are made, Ellesmere and Seamount come with a selection of apron bases. The symmetric interior has a comfortable lumbar shape on each side, while the out-sides are designed to be sculptural and time-less.
Animavi | Wood And Stainless Steel Bench (2006)
Designed for Animavi, a Los Angeles based sustainable furniture company, this indoor/outdoor bench highlights the ’2-plank-bench’ simplicity and can showcase a variety of ‘plank’ materials. A small wedge on each end locks the stainless steel bases and planks together like a secret puzzle.
Kohler Co. | Full Bath Faucet Collection For Retail (2010)
The Alteo spout has a tall arched shape inspired by the natural curve of a water jet. The entire collection is designed with a distinctive edge and soft curves – made to fit an easygoing, contemporary styled home.
Kohler Co. | Cast Iron Vessel (2007)
The Dolce Vita vessel was the first in a series of vessels designed to showcase both the enameled interior and the black coated exterior. The outside has a textured design resembling a pine cone. Hidden in the texture are 3 small feet positioning it halfway into a wall bracket.
Kohler Co. | Vitreous Counter top Sink (1998)
More sculptural than utility – a gestural and bold Scandinavian style was accentuated by two-colored glaze options.
Kohler Co. | Vitreous Pedestal Sink (2013)
Practical simplicity. A pedestal sink can often lack surface area needed for temporarily putting down the grooming products in use, or for placing a soap dish or hand-lotion, etc.. The Veer was designed to provide as much functional space as possible around the basin, and at the same time fit into a variety of smaller bathrooms.
Animavi | Winner, Sustainability Award, Design Within Reach M+D+F Event, San Francisco (2009)
The Hang Chair was chosen from over 80 furniture entries to be one of 15 pieces shown at the M+D+F event at the DWR Potrero Hill studio. Winner of the Sustainability Award, its sustainable qualities included recycled domestic content for the stainless steel, the recyclable seat (in resin or ABS), easily detachable parts, and local production (made in Southern California). Connected via the seat, the two nesting leg-parts are left to be slightly flexible by design. A very comfortable seating experience.
Animavi | A Sustainable Armchair For The Luxury Market (2007)
The inspiration for the Animavi Club Chair comes from a combination of the classic Adirondack chair, the exhilarating energy of the Maxell “blown away guy” ad, and the love of fluid curves and simple forms. The leather is organically tanned, the stainless steel has high domestic recycled content, and the interior seat frame is a thermoformed sheet of 3Form recycled resin. The Club Chair is made in California.
KitchenAid | Stainless Tea Kettle (2010)
A whistling tea kettle needs a few basic features: a handle that is comfortable and provides room to slide back for balance while pouring, a geometry to keep your hands safe from burning gas-flames, and the whistling spout tip should be easy to open with one hand. We brought these features together in a simple, iconic shape of two intersecting circles, making a strong statement on the stovetop.
Meyer Corp. For Rachael Ray | Cast Iron Cookware Collection (2010)
Soft curves and thin sleek lines redefine a classic cast-iron terrine for this cookware collection for Rachael Ray. A soft roll on top of the lid adds extra strength.
Dinnerware collection for Crate and Barrel (2009)
A collection of stackable plates and bowls for casual dining, with an easy going rounded square shape. The collection was sold in white only through Crate and Barrel stores and on-line for several seasons.
Sprout chair collection coming soon.
Working as a collaborative group, we get involved in all aspects of the design process. Whether it's going out on the road to collect insights and gather user input, building initial foam models or foam-core mock-ups around the large work-table, or pushing for the ultimate surface perfection while building Alias files for renderings, 3D prototyping and final design definition.
